The service is where everything starts: the overhead mast or underground supply, the meter base and the main disconnect that feed the panel. New builds need one, older services sometimes need replacing, and a larger panel can mean the service has to grow with it.

Service work involves the utility as well as the electrical contractor. Daniel works out what the utility needs, coordinates the timing of the shutoff and reconnection, does the work to code and arranges the inspection, so you are not left piecing it together yourself.

What is the difference between an overhead and an underground service?

An overhead service brings power from the utility to the building through a line to a mast or attachment point. An underground service runs the supply through a buried conductor instead. Which one a property has, or needs, depends on the site, the utility and the local requirements.

Who do I call first, the utility or the electrician?

Start with the electrician. Daniel can tell you whether the job needs a new or upgraded service, what to request from the utility, and how the timing of the shutoff and reconnection will work, so you are not relaying messages between two parties and guessing what comes next.

Does upgrading my panel mean upgrading the service too?

Sometimes. If the new panel is larger than the existing service can supply, the service entrance may need upgrading as well. The existing service is checked before quoting, so you know upfront whether the job is a panel upgrade alone or a panel and service upgrade together.
